This course provides an overview of Asian economic development models post WW2 with specific case studies involving Japan, China, India and the four “little dragons” (Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea). Readings, assignments and discussion will focus on how government policy direction in
these economies shaped their development, and economic, political and cultural challenges that arose including the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s. The course examines how both regional and global forces shaped Asia-Pacific development over the past 70 years, and the context, opportunities and challenges facing the region today. EXMN 665 examines how the history and economic development of selected Asian economies impacts how business is done today. The course presents a macro level view of economic development in selected countries and the region, and is designed as a companion to EXMN 669, which includes a field research component and focuses on a micro or firm level examination of the business environment, with specific reference to cultural considerations and the influence of culture on business practices, in one or more countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
